Loose bundle of cream-colored wool still holding the curl of the fleece, lanolin-rich to the touch and smelling faintly of the sheep and the shear-shed. A handful carded between the fingers comes apart into a soft cloud that wants to stay in the air.

Chronicle
Sheared in the spring rotation by the flock-masters' cooperative that runs the lower pastures, then graded against a framework that has survived three attempted reforms and one outright revolt. Spinners, weavers, and dyers each buy their own grade, and the remaining seconds go into the felting barrels that the hatters run at the end of the season. A bale of wool in the right cellar keeps its fiber for years; a bale in the wrong one learns what moths are for.
