Stackable
Nearly weightless between two fingers, vane striped brown and cream, the spine straight enough that it barely rolls when laid on a plank. Catches the light along the barbs in a way that suggests it was preened, not shed.
Entry
Chronicle
Collected from the molting grounds where the large meat-birds shelter out the hottest weeks of the year, then sorted for straightness by the fletchers' apprentices before anybody else gets to see the pile. The ones that do not make the cut end up in inkpots, pillows, and the hatbands of people who cannot afford better birds than that. A fletcher who insists on matched pairs for every arrow is a fletcher whose work you can trust not to wander off-line over distance.
