Round iron-banded oak shield a hand's breadth wider than the shoulder it rests against, with a central boss hammered from one piece and a leather arm-strap softened by long use. Rings softly when struck across the boss and dully when struck along the rim.

Overview

Built to a militia specification that the guild has tried to modernize twice and the militias have rejected twice, on the reasonable grounds that the current shield stops arrows adequately and the modernizations would require retraining every sergeant from the rim out. Apprentices earn their journeyman stamp on the day their first finished shield passes the drop test from second-floor height without splitting the boards. A shield that has been refaced twice belongs to its carrier in a way a fresh one does not.
