Stackable
Curled slabs of outer bark peeled off a felled trunk in strips as long as a forearm, grey and fissured on the weathered face, pale and faintly damp on the side that was against the wood. They keep the curve of the tree no matter how long they are pressed.

Chronicle
Taken off the log before it goes anywhere near a saw, because the mills charge extra to sharpen a blade that has been through grit-caught bark all morning. Tanners buy it by the cartload and will argue at length about which side of a hill the tree stood on. Everyone else uses it to get a fire going in wet weather, which the tanners consider a waste and the rest of the world considers a Tuesday.
