🛡️ Holy Shield RuneCombat

A slim tome in limewood boards, four leaves and no more, with a thumb of pale limestone set into the front cover and engraved with a cross that has been deepened by rubbing rather than by the carver. The plate is warm on the side that has been against a palm, and it stays warm longer than stone should.

Overview

One reading of Holy Shield, and the engraving goes with it. The boards are kept; it is the rune that is spent.

Lore

Cut and bound in quantity by temple novices as the dull half of their first year, which is why so many of them are slightly wrong and why the good ones are worth asking after by the carver's mark. The blessing is laid on at the altar in batches at dawn, and a plate left uncut past its season simply stops taking one — the temples say the stone forgets, and the stonemasons say the temples cut them too thin.
