Commissioned in the last years of the Forge-Quarter Agreement, when the volcanic smiths were still accepting outside orders and their apprentices could not yet tell which commissions they were permitted to finish. Every axe out of that workshop was marked with the same hexagonal stamp on the cheek and the same oath on the underside, and every one of them eventually comes back for rebanking. The old smiths will not confirm whether the ember will ever actually go out, and nobody has yet outlived an axe long enough to find out.
