Every mining pit eventually finds something it didn’t expect. Seams of ore that weren’t on any survey, water pockets that drown a morning’s work, hollow chambers that echo back the sound of tools in ways no-one wants to think about too hard. Veterans keep a packed kit near the mouth, ready to run, because the pit is never finished telling you what it is.
