Keep

The Barracks got walls. A curtain of grey stone wraps the hall, two corner towers flank the gate, and a central keep tower rises above them — archer slits stacked up its face, crenellations biting the sky, a banner snapping on top. At night a torch burns on each corner. This is where an empire stops training soldiers and starts housing them.

A Keep is the first building in a kingdom that admits it is preparing for war. The Barracks drills soldiers; the Keep shelters them. Every corner tower watches a different horizon, every slit is aimed at a threat someone has already imagined. By the time the Keep rises, the peace it guards is no longer the same peace it was built to defend.
