Overview

Flying wildlife, and the box turtle’s rule moved into the air.

It never starts anything. A bat wanders the field the way the birds do and does not care that you are under it — walk through a dozen and none of them will touch you. Hit one and that changes: a blow riles it, and a riled bat comes down and bites whoever is still standing there. Walk away and it forgets. There is no grudge in it, and a player who leaves them alone never learns they have teeth.

What makes it a different creature from the turtle is which way the numbers point. The turtle answers a blow by being hard to hit again; the bat has no answer at all. Ten health and no armour is two swings from an armed player, and it is the most fragile thing in the field that will hit back. Its defence is that it is already moving — nine speed, and nine tenths of a player’s walk with nothing on the ground to walk around.

That is the trade, and it is the whole creature: the turtle makes you spend swings, the bat makes you land them. Bring something that swings once and a bat is nothing. Bring something that swings slowly and you will be bitten for two while you wind up.

Two points a bite is the same nuisance the worm’s is, without the venom. A bat is a thing you regret provoking rather than a thing you fight.

Its sheet is the odd one in the pack. Every other creature in Rare Icon is drawn a row per animation; the bat is drawn a row per direction — down, right, up, left, all four, where the birds mirror one side for the other — and the first column of each row is not part of the wingbeat. It is the bat dead, facing the way it was flying. So a dusk bat falls out of the sky in the direction it was last going, which no other animal here can do, and the three frames left over are the beat itself: wings down, tucked, wings up.
