Water
minecraft:waterWater is a fluid that generates abundantly across the Overworld in oceans, rivers, lakes, and underground springs. It can be collected with a bucket and placed to create infinite water sources, irrigate farmland, and negate fall damage.
Uses
- Farmland Hydration — Hydrates farmland within 4 blocks horizontally and 1 block vertically, keeping crops from reverting to dry, unhydrated soil.
- Obsidian and Stone Generation — Flowing onto lava source blocks produces obsidian; water flowing over lava produces cobblestone or stone depending on the contact direction.
- Fall Damage Negation — Landing in water at any depth of one block or more negates all fall damage, making it a common builder's safety net.
Found In
- Oceans, Rivers, and Lakes — Naturally generates as the dominant surface fluid in most Overworld biomes.
- Underground Aquifers — Generates as pockets and springs while caving, especially near lush caves and dripstone caves.
FAQ
Can I mine or pick up Water directly?
Not by hand. A bucket is required to scoop up a source block into a water bucket; flowing (non-source) water cannot be collected.
What happens if I place Water in the Nether?
It instantly evaporates into nothing, except when placed inside a cauldron, which can safely hold water in the Nether.
How far does Water spread?
A single source block spreads up to 7 blocks horizontally and falls indefinitely downward, turning into new source blocks where flows meet.
Does Water affect mob drowning?
Yes. Most land mobs and players have a breath timer of about 15 seconds underwater before they start taking drowning damage, extendable with the Respiration enchantment.
