Empty Map

mapenriched v1
minecraft:map

An empty map is crafted from paper and a compass and serves as the blank starting point for Minecraft's mapping system. Once activated, it begins recording the surrounding terrain from a top-down view, covering roughly 64 blocks in the Overworld or End and 32 blocks in the Nether. Empty maps stack up to 64, can be duplicated at a cartography table to keep multiple synced copies, and can be zoomed out up to four times to cover a much wider area.

FAQ

How do you craft an empty map?

Combine one compass and eight sheets of paper in a crafting grid; in Bedrock Edition, paper alone at a cartography table also works.

What happens when you use an empty map?

It becomes an activated map centered on your current position and begins drawing the terrain around you as you explore.

Can empty maps be duplicated?

Yes, an activated map can be cloned at a cartography table using extra paper, producing a copy that updates in sync with the original.

How do you get a wider view on a map?

Use a cartography table with extra paper to zoom the map out, up to four times, trading detail for a larger covered area.
