Void Air is an internal air variant that fills space outside the world's buildable height limits and in unloaded chunks. It behaves exactly like ordinary air but marks regions the game engine treats as beyond the playable boundary.

  • Above/below world height limits — Fills space above Y=319 and below Y=-64 in the Overworld (and equivalent bounds in the Nether/End).
  • Unloaded chunks — Also used to represent air in chunks that have not been generated or loaded yet.

FAQ

Can I mine or place Void Air?

No. It cannot be obtained, placed, or interacted with through normal survival gameplay.

Is Void Air different from regular air?

Functionally no — it behaves identically to normal air. It only differs internally as a marker for out-of-bounds space.

Can I see Void Air in-game?

Not normally. It only becomes visible as small blue-edged cubes when using a structure block with "Show Invisible Blocks" enabled.

Why does Void Air exist separately from Air?

Mojang split air into regular air, cave air, and void air in 1.13 to let the engine distinguish surface air from cave-generated or out-of-bounds air internally.
