Lodestone

A lodestone is a crafted block that anchors a compass. Using a compass on a lodestone binds the needle to point at that block from anywhere in the same dimension, letting players build reliable waypoints. It drops itself when mined with a pickaxe.

Uses

  • Compass Anchor — Right-click a compass on a lodestone to lock the compass to that location, overriding its default world-spawn behavior.
  • Waypoints — Placed lodestones create a network of navigation points for bases, portals, and remote outposts.

Found In

  • Crafting Table — Craft with 8 chiseled stone bricks around 1 iron ingot (changed from netherite in 1.21.5, making it renewable).

FAQ

How do I make a compass point to a lodestone?

Hold a compass and use it on the lodestone. The compass then points to that block whenever you carry it in the same dimension.

Does a lodestone compass work in the Nether or End?

A lodestone-bound compass points to the lodestone only while you are in the same dimension as it; in other dimensions the needle spins.

Is a lodestone expensive to craft now?

No longer — as of 1.21.5 it needs just one iron ingot instead of a netherite ingot, making it fully renewable.
