Ice

minecraft:ice

Ice is a translucent, slippery block that forms in cold biomes over water and generates naturally in frozen oceans, rivers, and snowy beaches. It only survives harvesting with a Silk Touch tool; otherwise it melts into water (or vanishes if unsupported) as soon as it is broken.

Uses

  • Packed Ice — Nine ice blocks craft into one packed ice block, a denser form that does not melt and keeps its slipperiness without needing to stay near cold light levels.
  • Ice Boat Highways — Boats glide across ice at roughly 40 blocks per second, far faster than on water, making ice a popular material for long-distance transport lanes.

Found In

  • Frozen Oceans and Rivers — Generates as the surface layer over water in frozen ocean, frozen river, and snowy beach biomes.
  • Frozen Peaks — Small ice patches generate embedded in frozen peaks mountain terrain.
  • Ancient Cities — Some ice blocks appear as decoration within ancient city structures.

FAQ

Do I need Silk Touch to collect Ice?

Yes. Mining Ice without Silk Touch destroys the block and turns the space into water (if there was a block below) or simply disappears, dropping nothing.

What tool mines Ice fastest?

A pickaxe. Ice only has 0.5 hardness, so even a wooden pickaxe breaks it almost instantly.

Does sunlight melt Ice?

No. Ice only melts when adjacent to a light source with a light level greater than 11, not from direct sunlight.

What is Ice used for?

Building frictionless floors and boat highways, crafting Packed Ice, and decorating cold-biome builds.
