Gold Ore is an Overworld ore that yields Raw Gold when mined with an iron pickaxe or better; any lesser tool destroys the block without a drop. It is far more common in badlands biomes than elsewhere.

FAQ

What tool do I need to mine Gold Ore?

An iron pickaxe or better. Wood, stone, or gold pickaxes (and bare hands) break the block but drop nothing.

Does Fortune increase Gold Ore drops?

Yes. Fortune I, II, or III yields 1–2, 1–3, or 1–4 Raw Gold per block respectively.

Does Silk Touch work on Gold Ore?

Yes. Silk Touch drops the ore block itself instead of Raw Gold, letting you relocate or smelt it directly later.

Why is gold so common in badlands?

Badlands biomes generate roughly 50 gold ore blobs per chunk spread from Y=32 to Y=256, far more than the 4 blobs per chunk found elsewhere in the Overworld.
