The End Portal Frame is an indestructible block that naturally generates in the stronghold portal room. Twelve frames arranged in a ring, each holding an Eye of Ender, activate an End Portal.

Uses

End Portal Activation — Insert an Eye of Ender into each of the 12 frames forming the ring; once all are filled, the center 3x3 area becomes an active End Portal.

Found In

Stronghold portal room — Generates naturally as a ring of 12 frames over a pool of lava, each with a 10% chance of already holding an Eye of Ender.

FAQ

Can I mine or craft an End Portal Frame?

No. It is unobtainable and unbreakable in Survival or Adventure mode; it can only be placed via Creative mode or commands.

How many Eyes of Ender does an End Portal need?

12 — one per frame in the ring. Any frames that already generated with an eye reduce the number you need to supply.

Does the frame's orientation matter?

Yes. Frames must face inward toward the portal's center; a naturally generated stronghold portal is already correctly oriented.

How much light does an End Portal Frame give off?

A light level of 1, a reduction from its original light level of 15 in early development versions.
