Uses

  • Diamond — Mining drops one diamond plus experience; diamonds craft tools, armor, and key blocks.
  • Fortune Yield — A Fortune III pickaxe averages about 2.2 diamonds per ore block mined.
  • Silk Touch Collection — With Silk Touch, the ore block itself drops for later smelting or display.

Found In

  • Overworld — Generates from Y = 16 down to Y = -63, more common deeper.
  • Deepslate Layers — Deepslate diamond ore peaks around Y = -58 to -59, the best level to mine.

FAQ

What tool do I need to mine diamond ore?

An iron pickaxe or better. A wooden or stone pickaxe breaks the block but drops nothing.

What is the best Y level to find diamonds?

Around Y = -58 to -59, where deepslate diamond ore is most concentrated.

How do I get more diamonds per ore?

Use a pickaxe enchanted with Fortune; Fortune III can drop several diamonds from a single block.

Can I collect the ore block itself?

Yes. A Silk Touch pickaxe drops the ore block instead of a diamond so you can smelt it later.

Why do exposed diamonds seem rare?

Ore blocks exposed to air have reduced generation odds, so deep, enclosed mining is more efficient.
