Uses

  • Coal — Mining without Silk Touch drops 1 coal, boosted to 2-4 with Fortune. Coal fuels furnaces, crafts torches and campfires, and combines with iron to make its own distinct crafting uses.

Found In

  • Deep Underground (below Y=0) — Rarely replaces deepslate or tuff below Y=8, most common near Y=-8 to Y=-63 alongside regular coal ore's lower range.
  • Caves and ravines — Exposed in deep cave systems and ravines that cut through the deepslate layer.

FAQ

What tool do I need to mine Deepslate Coal Ore?

Any pickaxe, wood tier or higher. Without a pickaxe it drops nothing.

Does Fortune increase coal drops?

Yes. Fortune I-III can yield up to 2, 3, or 4 coal per block respectively.

How is it different from regular Coal Ore?

It has higher hardness (4.5 vs 3) so it takes longer to mine, but the same blast resistance and identical drops.

Should I use Silk Touch on it?

Only if you want the ore block itself for decoration; Silk Touch yields fewer resources than mining normally with Fortune.
