Coal Ore is the most common ore in the Overworld, generating in large veins from the surface down to bedrock. It requires at least a wooden pickaxe and yields one coal per block, boosted by Fortune.

  • Overworld caves and mountains — Spawns from Y=136 down to bedrock, peaking around Y=96, in two vein batches per chunk.
  • Deepslate coal ore — Rarely replaces coal ore below Y=8 within the deepslate layer.
  • Fossils and abandoned camps — Appears in small quantities embedded in fossil and abandoned camp structures.
