About Mithril platelegs
"These look pretty heavy."
> _"These look pretty heavy."_
Mithril platelegs are free-to-play mid-tier melee leg armour requiring 20 Defence to equip. They were released with the original RuneScape launch carry-over in January 2001 and remain the standard step up from steel for accounts pushing past the early Defence tiers without paying for membership.
Smithing platelegs at Smithing 68 consumes three mithril bars on an anvil for 150 experience. The output is one of the more efficient mithril smithing options for non-ironmen since the GE buy price typically clears the bar cost when bars are in surplus.
Stat-wise the legs offer +24 stab, +22 slash, +20 crush and +22 ranged defence, with the expected mithril penalty of -4 magic and -11 ranged attack. The April 2021 update widened the ranged penalty from -7 to -11, pushing mithril legs out of the picture for hybrid setups in favour of dragonhide chaps in the same tier band.

Market Strategy
- Trading Notes
- F2P availability keeps demand consistent from low-level mains and ironman alts
- Smithing-supply driven: mithril bar price shifts immediately ripple into platelegs
- Buy limit of 125 per 4 hours is moderate so flips need patience
- April 2021 ranged-penalty nerf pushed hybrid demand to dragonhide chaps
- Track mithril bar margin: when bars dip cheap, smith-to-flip stays profitable
- Stock during F2P bond promotions when new accounts roll through 20 Defence
- Avoid bulk buys above high alch; the floor barely floats over alch price
